Typical components: Precision pins, shafts, guide rollers, plungers and wear sleeves.

View Material Details

Zirconia-Toughened Alumina (ZTA)

Zirconia-toughened alumina is an alumina-based composite for custom wear parts that need a different balance of hardness and fracture resistance than conventional alumina.

Material advantages: Combines an alumina matrix with zirconia toughening; hardness, strength and fracture resistance depend on composition, grain structure and processing.

Available grades: Alumina-matrix ZTA with nominal 20 wt% zirconia, with other composition requirements considered for custom projects.

Typical components: Wear sleeves, guide components, valve seats, seal rings and structural spacers.

CNC Machining Design Guidelines

Reduce your CNC machining costs with our design guidelines. Great Ceramic engineers provide actionable DFM feedback before production, ensuring a seamless transition from prototyping to volume manufacturing.

Diamond grinding wheels cannot produce razor-sharp 90° internal steps. Forcing sharp corners causes wheel breakdown and high notch stress. Specify an internal fillet radius of R ≥ 0.50 mm or incorporate a 0.8 mm grinding undercut groove.

Brittle edge breakout occurs when tools exit unsupported thin ceramic walls. Maintain structural wall thickness of ≥ 0.80 mm (0.50 mm allowed on well-supported lands). Always include 0.3 to 0.5 mm protective chamfers on external edges.

Micro-cracks easily propagate between closely spaced holes under thermal shock. Maintain web distance between adjacent holes of at least 1.5× hole diameter, and 2.0× hole diameter from outer edges. Keep blind hole depth-to-diameter ratios ≤ 4:1.

Direct tapped internal threads in sintered Alumina/Zirconia act as notch stress risers and are prone to stripping. Use Machinable Ceramics (Macor) for internal threads, or design through-holes with external clamping bolts, or bond threaded Invar/Titanium inserts into counterbores.

Ceramics CNC Machining FAQs

Unlike structural metals that shear plastically, fully sintered engineering ceramics possess extreme hardness (up to 2800 HV) and near-zero fracture toughness. They cannot be cut with carbide or HSS tools; they must be micro-ground using diamond abrasives under rigid flood cooling. Feed rates are controlled in micrometers to avoid subsurface micro-fracturing and edge breakout.

Selected precision-ground features can reach ±0.002 mm. That number isn’t a blanket default: the achievable tolerance depends on material, part size, geometry, surface requirement and inspection method. We review each drawing before quoting, so tight tolerance lands only on the surfaces that need it.

Yes. Machined prototypes can be evaluated from a single piece. Typical samples run 5–20 parts and pilots 50–200. A different minimum may apply when dedicated tooling, forming or a special material batch is required, and we confirm that in the quotation.

Typical prototype lead times are 7–10 working days for MGC or BN parts from stock, 15–20 days for alumina or zirconia, and 20–30 days for AlN, Si3N4 or SiC. These are typical figures confirmed in the quotation; they start once requirements and material are locked.

Machinable glass ceramic (MGC) and boron nitride (BN) are easiest, since they cut from block with standard tooling. Alumina and zirconia need diamond precision machining of sintered blanks. SiC, Si3N4 and AlN are grind-focused. The machinability gradient above walks through all three tiers.

At minimum: a drawing or CAD file, material, and quantity. No drawing yet? Send the part’s function, operating conditions and material priorities, and we’ll start with a manufacturability review.

Complete CAD packages with defined materials and tolerances receive an initial engineering acknowledgment within 24 hours. Formal DFM evaluation and comprehensive commercial quotations are completed within 1 to 2 business days.
